It is told in the Chuang Tzu that

When Tzu Sang Hu died, his two friends,
Meng Tzu Fan and Tzu Chiu Chiang,
played the lute and sang:

“Oh, Sang Hu Came; oh Sang Hu came!
Now he’s gone back to being what he
truly is,
While we must go on being human!”


(and I have the sudden urge to carve their song
in wood, and let it wither on my father’s grave)
